Mindfulness in Physical Education:
Taking Moments to Connect Mind & Body
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is a practice of allowing yourself to be present in the now moments, resisting from allowing yourself to be judgemental or critical of yourself, your thoughts, and the world around you.

Mindfulness can look so different for everyone. Some like to sit in quiet or with soft music playing. Some enjoy yoga or Tai Chi, while others enjoy a practice of controlled, focused breathing. Whatever you choose, beginning a mindful practice can only help you feel more present, focused, relaxed, and ready to take on day to day challenges!

Mindfulness in Phys ED
I began incorporating mindful moments into my teaching two years ago. It simply looks like students arriving in a large gym and relaxing on the floor to quiet yoga-style music.
It has slowly grown into various controlled breathing activities, having a library of mindful books for students to read, creating mindful jars, and using various iPad apps to assist students with finding their personal mindful practice.
We started our process slow and my students seek out opportunities to take a moment for themselves.
